As practical as they are decorative, bedside lamps can dress up any bedroom and highlight its style and décor. Bedside lamps are available in an astonishing variety of styles and sizes and can play a significant decorative role in a room. However, before choosing one, you need to determine what type of lighting you want. Whether you’re looking for accent lighting or general lighting, you’re sure to find the bedside lamp that meets your needs if you follow the tips outlined below.
A lampshade affects light quality. If it’s too dark or opaque, the light will be dimmed too much. If a lampshade is too narrow, the light won’t diffuse well. A lampshade that’s wider at the base than the top will help diffuse light. The diameter of a lampshade should be equal to or less than the width of your bedside table and its base should line up with or be higher than the top of the pillows (take a measurement from the top of the table to the top edge of your pillow).
A bedside lamp’s brightness should be based on the lamp’s purpose. For soft lighting, choose a bulb that’s less than 40 watts. We recommend LED bulbs because they don’t get hot, last a long time and come in colour spectrums that range from warm to cold white. Adding a dimmer on the wall or bedside table (a small device connected to the lamp) is a great idea and will let you set the light intensity according to the intended use.
If you need general lighting, choose a large, lightweight lampshade made of light-coloured fabric that will diffuse light well. A flared, large or drum-shaped lampshade that shines both up and down provides the best general lighting. A table lamp with a long base will also distribute light throughout the room. Here’s a small tip: If you opt for a table lamp with a dimmer, you can set the light intensity according to your needs and the time of day. For this type of lighting, let your imagination run free since the lamp’s function isn’t as much of a priority. Choose a lamp with a base or shade that’s extravagantly shaped or a very bright shade, always keeping the harmony of your décor in mind.
If you love reading in bed, install an adjustable reading lamp on your bedside table. It’s important that the lamp is affixed high enough so that its light shines on your book. You should also keep in mind the height of your bedside table and bed. It’s tempting to choose a lamp that’s on the small side to free up as much space as possible on your bedside table but doing so can be a mistake. A lampshade should reach up to your shoulder when you’re sitting, that is, about 37 to 41 inches from the floor. To avoid glare, it’s best if you cannot see the bulb when sitting or lying on your bed. For maximum comfort, opt for models with an adjustable swivel base and dimmer.
While a bedside lamp is often set up on a bedside table, why not go with a more original approach! Try placing it on a pile of books or decorative boxes. If space is at a premium, opt for a wall-mounted reading lamp. Most of them are adjustable and can be plugged into an electrical outlet or electrical box. There are many options available depending on your tastes and the space available.Let your imagination run free!
