Counter stools are must-haves in the kitchen!

With all the styles and models of kitchen, bar and counter stools available on the market, it can be difficult to make the right choice. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect model for you!

Find the ideal counter stool height

Before making a decision, you need to know the height and length of your kitchen counter. If you have a countertop that’s 36 inches high, you need a stool with a seat height that’s between 24 and 26 inches high (figure 1). For a counter height of 42 inches, the seat height should be about 30 inches (figure 2). You should have 9 to 12 inches of vertical space between the stool seat and the counter (figure 3). Moreover, there should be a 14- to 18-inch clearance between the sitter’s legs and the counter (figure 4). We suggest using two stools for a 48- to 60-inch counter and three stools for a 72- to 96-inch counter. This is only a rule of thumb. Stool spacing may vary according to the type of base—fixed or swiveling—seat width and whether the stool has armrests. Allow for 24 to 30 inches between stools, so guests feel comfortable.

Choose comfort and sturdiness

To choose the perfect counter stool, consider its comfort and sturdiness. Bar and counter stools with a back provide more comfort and support and are ideal for long meals and receptions. For their part, kitchen stools without a back are less cumbersome since they can be stored under the counter. For added comfort, choose a model with armrests. However, make sure the stool clears the counter when you push the stool under it. Stools with footrests are very practical and kid friendly and are more ergonomic. Stools that swivel are very handy as it’s easier to sit down in them, while those that are height adjustable are useful as they are more comfortable for all body types.

Pick a base that matches your style and your space

There are two types of bases: four legged or single foot. Four-legged stools offer a classic look as well as great comfort and stability and adapt to any decor. More modern looking, single-foot stools take up less space than the four-legged ones, but they are less stable. Make sure the base of the stool you choose is wide enough to prevent falls.

Trending: Be daring and choose mismatched or bright colours! They’ll give your kitchen a vibrant makeover.

Wipe stools down with a damp cloth to clean. Add felt pads under the stool’s base to avoid scratching your floor.

Whether it’s modern or traditional, leather or fabric, metal or wood, a kitchen stool must match your decor and your taste. Don’t hesitate to sit on a stool to test its comfort and sturdiness prior to purchase.
