Lighting : The bathroom

For practical purposes, the bathroom needs to be organized - especially on mornings when you’re in a rush. It’s also a room of choice for relaxation. Bath bubbles, silky towels, and subdued lighting are called for during those moments when you’re taking care of yourself. The key to a bathroom adapted to your needs is lighting matched to the functionality of each area. In this article, you’ll find hints to help you plan lighting for this multi-use room. Need advice? Our experts are available in-store and via our online chat to guide you toward choices adapted to your needs.

Think general, supplementary, and decorative lighting.

Since the bathroom is a multifunctional room, its lighting must be as well. Just determine the uses of your room then associate them with one of three lighting categories. By combining these three rules, you’ll have lighting adapted to your activities. First of all, general lighting. As its name implies, its role is to light your entire room. Then there’s supplementary lighting, which focuses light on a specific area of your bathroom. For example, a wall light above the vanity will illuminate the sink area. Finally, there’s decorative lighting, which adds a lovely luminous accent or highlights a decoration and adds charm to the room’s ambiance. We highly recommend you use a dimmer to adjust your lighting according to the activity of the moment. You’ll appreciate relaxing in your bubble bath under subdued lighting!

General lighting

Flush mount : Looking for a strong and decorative lighting fixture? Think ceiling light! This type of lighting fixture provides 360-degree lighting diffusion. It’s perfect on its own to light the entire surface area of your bathroom. With light bulbs or integrated LED, we offer hundreds of flush and semi-flush ceiling light models for all tastes and styles. We highly recommend you avoid ceiling lights with fabric. With humidity, the latter may turn yellow or deteriorate rapidly. Place the ceiling light in the center of the bathroom and you’re done.

Rail reflector : If you’d like to brighten up several zones of your bathroom simultaneously but have only one electric outlet on the ceiling, think about a rail reflector. You can direct its multiple heads toward spots in your room requiring maximum luminosity. For the bathroom, we suggest a selection of reflectors with 1 to 4 heads. For a finish, choose a color that matches the other lighting fixtures in your bathroom. Our manufacturers are increasingly diversifying and offer much more stylish reflectors compared to traditional versions.

Recessed lighting : Looking for understated, divided, and discrete lighting? Recessed lighting is the solution! In your lighting plan, drill a hole with a diameter matching the specifications of the recessed light you’ve chosen. Yes but... 3, 4, 5, or 6 inches? The bathroom standard is definitely a 4-inch recessed light. And thanks to innovation, installing a recessed light now needs a lot less paraphernalia to fasten and connect it. The recommended distance between each recessed light depends on the number of lumens it has, but the space between them is generally between 4 and 6 feet.

The sink and vanity area

Bathroom wall light : Does your bathroom design need a lighting fixture above the mirror? Choose a wall light! In addition to being decorative, a wall light is essential for the functionality of your room’s sink and vanity area. Without it, make-up or shaving would be a lot trickier! Offered in a number of styles, you’ll find what works perfectly with your decor among our wide selection. We suggest you choose a wall light directed toward your sink to obtain enough lighting for your beauty sessions.

Single pendant : If instead you prefer the charm of a single hanging light, you’ll be pleased to know that it too is a possibility. However, you’ll need an electric outlet on the ceiling for each lighting fixture. We often see modern constructions with a hanging light on either side of the mirror. Choose a hanging light directed toward the sink and adjust its height so its base is 7 feet above the ground. This will avoid any glare.

Wall light : Our manufacturers offer a multitude of models with a long, thin silhouette that perfectly matches the sides of your mirror without creating bulk. We strongly advise you to avoid a wall fixture that shines from the front so as to prevent a blinding diffusion of light. At the edge of the mirror, the base of the wall light should be 60 to 66 inches from the ground.

The shower corner

Recessed lighting in the shower: Looking to light up the inside of your shower space? We suggest a recessed light designed for this purpose. Just drill a hole with a diameter matching the specification of the recessed light and that’s it. We suggest you leave 18 inches between the wall and the lighting fixture. Depending on the dimensions of your shower, one or two recessed lights should be enough.

The bath area

Hanging light : Want to add a touch of decor to your bath area? Think hanging light! Our suppliers are continually reinventing themselves and offer superb hanging lights certified for humid spots. Plan an empty space of 7 feet under the light to avoid hitting your head as you enter your haven of relaxation.
