1- If you opt for single pendant lights, choose their size and quantity according to the size of your kitchen island. Choose an odd number if you use several small pendants (3, 5, etc.) or an even number (2, 4, etc.) if you use larger pendants. Choose a pendant light whose width is no wider than one-fourth that of the island. Remember that pendants must not interfere with your visibility. The base of your fixtures should be about 30 to 36 inches from the surface of the island. Install as many electrical outlets as there are single pendant.
2- Some people prefer installing a pendant light over their kitchen island. Choose a pendant light whose width is no wider than one-fourth that of the island to avoid hindering visibility. Choose a pendant length that is half that of your island for a coherent look. The advantage of a pendant light system is that it only requires one electrical outlet. Be even more efficient by choosing a pendant that lights downward. That way, light will be directed toward your work surface.
3- Recessed fittings over the kitchen island are gaining in popularity. They are discreet, efficient and won’t clutter up the space visually. Generally, two to four recessed fittings are enough, depending on the length of your island.
